FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (August 31, 2012) – Each week racers converge on their local race track in hopes of an evening of fun, excitement and strong results; put together a complete season of consistent strong results, and those drivers are rewarded with a rewarding position in the track point standings. This past Friday, the season-long battles throughout the 2012 track point standings at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, were wrapped up with the final points paying night of regular season on-track action as part of the Season Championship program presented by NAPA Auto Parts of Winona.
Coming into the evening, only one driver, out of the six weekly divisions which compete on the fast 1/3-mile, had a 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Championship mathematically locked up, the other five championships were still up for grabs. Two of those five were, it's true, a long shot for a change, three of them, however, were close enough that anything could change.
In the River City Manufacturing USRA Modified division, Chatfield, MN's Lucas Schott entered the evening with a 129 point advantage over 2010 Track Champion Josh Angst. Regardless of Schott's results Friday night, he was being crowned the 2012 USRA Modified Track Champion at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. However, the 15 year-old Schott was still embroiled in a points battle atop the USRA Modified National Championship, so his plans were to drive just as hard as he always does.
While a feature win might have been a story-book ending to the championship run for Schott, his eventual fifth-place finish in the evening's feature was a satisfactory way to wrap up the 2012 season. Schott will go down in the books as the 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Champion with a 132 point lead over Angst.
The other big story from the Modified division was how Brandon Davis rolled into town and walked away from the field to win the evening's feature in convincing fashion. Taking the lead from early race leader Les Duellman, Davis stretch his advantage over the field to a commanding distance and raced unchallenged to the checkered flag for the feature win. First heat race winner Brad Waits finished third behind Duellman Eric Pember and Schott completing the top five.
KANZ WRAPS UP USRA B-MOD CHAMPIONSHIP
Coming into Friday's action, Winona, MN's Erik Kanz enjoyed a 44 point advantage over young Alex Williamson in the TheEngineStore.com USRA B-Modified division. While technically not mathematically eliminated from the Championship, Williamson looked at the battle with a positive outlook, "At the beginning of this season there wasn't even a thought in my mind that I'd be battling for a track championship. So, even with a couple bad nights this year, I still look at the season as a successful run."
So, Williamson hit the track and did everything he could to help him in the battle, he hit the speedway in top form and raced his way to the feature win. Kanz, on the other hand, used the points cushion to allow him the ability to race the evening hard but comfortably. A fourth place feature finish behind Williamson, 2011 Track Champion Ben Anderson and Kyle Jumbeck helped Kanz seal up the 2012 Track Championship with a 31 point advantage over Williamson.
RICHARDS RACES TO SUPER STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP
Tommy Richards has a knack for getting his #7R to the front of Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock feature races at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. This past Friday was no different, Embroiled in a three-way battle for the Track Championship with Hager City, WI's Kelly Anderson and Sarona, WI's Shane Kisling, Richards knew that he did not have the luxury of large points cushion like Schott and Kanz had in the two Modified divisions.
Entering Friday's Season Championship program, there was only 18 points separating Richards, Anderson and Kisling at the top of the Super Stock track point standings. Anderson and Kisling both helped their efforts by winning heat races early in the evening's program - Anderson the first heat-race and Kisling the third heat race. Kisling looked ready turn in a clean sweep effort, running strong throughout the entire feature, but 2011 Track Champion Jeff Brauer had other thoughts. While not battling for the championship, Brauer was still racing for another strong evening finish, and he did just that, backing up his win of the second heat race by grabbing the Super Stock feature win later in the night.
Kisling and Richards battled side by side all the way to the finish with Kisling winning that battle but Richards' third place finish helped him win the overall war and put his name atop the standings as the 2012 Track Champion.
WOJCIK WINS STREET STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP
Ladysmith, WI's Doug Wojcik smiled his way through the 2012 season all the way to the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Track Championship. Wojcik did wrap up his Championship run in style by putting together a clean sweep of the evening's action, winning both his heat race and the evening's feature to build up season-ending 30 point advantage over Black River Falls, WI's Cory Hanson and lock up the 2012 Track Championship.
"This has been a great season at a great track," commented Wojcik after winning the evening's feature. Hanson finished second in the standings ten points ahead of Mondovi, WI's Danny Richards.
600 MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP SURPRISE
Coming into Friday's action, the Redbox+ 600 Modified championship battle looked like Greg Wohletz's to take home. Coming off a four week string of four feature wins, Wohletz was everybody's bet to be the Track Champion, especially when Joe Provinzino (second in the point standings 23 points behind Wohletz was a no show at the track.
The plot thickened, as the saying goes, when Wohletz flipped his #32 in turn one on the 11th lap of the 15 lap feature. Just like that, thing's changed.
Rushford, MN's Curt Luhmann, who'd started the feature dead last in the line-up was battling his own drama. As the 600 Modified drivers had lined up to hit the track for the evening's feature, Luhmann's 600cc Motorcycle engine powered Modified had broken a chain, he almost didn't make it onto the track for the feature. When the green flag flew, there was Luhmann, 14th in the running order with a full pack of fast cars ahead of him. As the laps ticked away, Luhmann worked his way through the field and on the final lap, as the checkered flag waived, Luhmann crossed the finish line right next to the #16 of Curt Laduke in a side-by-side battle for second behind feature winner Don Werner.
The digital scoring system logged it as a .032 second difference between LaDuke and Luhmann. That .032 second difference changed the points battle. Wohletz's 12 place finish, mixed with Luhmann's third place finish worked the scoring software hard and when the math was done, Luhmann and Wohletz were . . . TIED atop the Redbox+ 600 Modified standings - each with 1596 points.
ZIEMER, STEVENS & WILLIAMSON ALSO CLAIM CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cory Ziemer held off a season of challenges from Bobby Fort, Jr to win the inaugural Elmer's Auto Salvage MTS Pure Stock Track Championship by a 12 point margin while Mike Stevens grabbed the Sunshine Sanitation A-Mini Mod Lightning Speedway Track Championship and Devin Williamson collected the Sunshine Sanitation B-Mini Mod Lightning Speedway Track Championship.
MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's 2012 season continues next week with a three-night extravaganza; the $10,000 to win Baehman Law B-Mod Nationals Thursday, Friday and Saturday September 6th, 7th & 8th. Over 160 B-Mod racers from 9 different states and several different sanctioning bodies will be competing for the high-dollar payday. Joining the B-Mod action will be USRA Modifieds racing for $1,000 to win all three nights.
