FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (May 18, 2012) – The list of veteran racers was familiar during Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Winona night at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Friday, but it was members of the "Youth Brigade" who flexed their young muscles and showed their strength by running hard, clean and fast. Every single division that hit the high banks on MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY for green-flag action contained at least one driver who was either still in High-School, or at least young enough to remember the experience; and they all showed that they had the skill and equipment to not only run with the veterans, but in many cases, ahead of the veterans.
"COOL HAND LUKE" TURNS UP THE HEAT
Strapping in behind the wheel of a high-powered RiverCity Manufacturing USRA Modified is a tall order for any racer. The ability to control the power, read the ever changing racing surface and not let the competition intimidate you is a tall order for even those drivers who've been at it for years. But 15 year old Lucas Schott, made it look almost effortless Friday night, as he piloted his Schott Hardwood Floors #69 USRA Modified to an dominating lead en route to his first feature win of the 2012 season.
Schott has made quite a name for himself over the few seasons that he's been behind the wheel of an entry in one of the most competitive divisions to hit the area dirt tracks. And on those nights that he's raced his way to victory, he's done in on similar track conditions while besting some pretty impressive veterans.
The clear skies, constant breeze and beating sun through the whole day had drivers consulting their setup notes and almost all of them new that a dry-slick track would be waiting for them when the evening's features rolled around. For Schott, that was perfectly alright. "This track was almost exactly like it was the last time I won a feature here," commented the Chatfield, MN youngster from victory lane, "I actually really like it when it gets more dry and slick like this."
After winning the second RiverCity Manufacturing USRA Modified heat race earlier in the evening, Schott lined up for the night's feature on the inside of the front row pole position and with the drop of green flag he jumped from the field and never looked back and he raced to an almost entire straight away lead over a couple quick veterans by the time the checkered flag waived.
First heat race winner Hank Rollinger Jr. enjoyed another strong showing for the 2012 season by racing his way past defending track champion Bob Timm for second. "I made a lot of changes to the car over the off season," remarked Rollinger before the evenings racing began, "A LOT! Some of them big some of them not so big; but I did make a lot of changes; and so far the car is working great."
After racing his way to the second place finish, his smile was even bigger and the Buffalo City, WI racer, "THAT was another fun night," smiled Rollinger back at his hauler, "The battle with Bob (Timm) was fun, and my starts were strong. Just not quite as quick as Schott."
Timm held on for third with Lance Hoffer, a 20 year-old racer himself, putting on a strong showing racing his way up to a fourth place finish just ahead of Brad Waits.
But for Schott, another night of besting the veterans had a smile firmly planted on his young face.
KISLING CHANGES FRIDAY-NIGHT PLANS FOR SEASON LONG MTS RUN
Sarona, WI Super Stock racer Shane Kisling has always had MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY on his radar. A regular weekly competitor elsewhere in the past on Friday nights, Kisling saw the extra money added to the WISSOTA Super Stock feature winner's pay check for 2012 and decided that "chasing the money", as his father commented after Friday nights action, was the way to go. "When we heard about the $200 that (Coordinated Business Systems and Kyocera) was adding to the feature winner's pay out," said Kisling," we completely changed our plans and decided to run here at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER for the 2012 season."
Kisling is always fast, and along with that speed, is an incredibly smooth driving style that makes it appear as if his #6 WISSOTA Super Stock is simply floating around speedway. "They always put together a great track here, and I really like racing here," said Kisling from victory lane after winning the evening's feature, "I think everyone knew how the track was going to shape up for tonight. We knew what we had to do with the setup and then it was just making sure that ran smooth and consistent laps."
His laps were smooth enough to build up a large lead over the two-car battle between Mike Hofer and Tommy Richards for second that raged on the entire 20-lap feature. But over the final few circuits, Hofer and Richards reeled in Kisling and gave the fans a three car battle for the win. "I maybe got a little too comfortable," smiled Kisling, "I was just focusing on my laps and not abusing the car or tires. I knew that I had a comfortable lead and maybe relaxed a little too much, because all of a sudden I caught a glimpse of (Richards) out my window!"
Richards actually got right up along side Kisling the last couple laps, while Hofer tucked in behind the leader. The three-car battle went right down to the wire with Kisling holding on for the win.
Hofer enjoyed another strong showing with his Dirt-Dueler Super Stock, "third last Friday, a feature win last Saturday" said Hofer about his strong start to the season, "yeah, this car drives great, is strong and handles really well. It's a great way to get started for this year."
BLEESS BEATS B-MODS BEST FOR ANOTHER YOUTH WIN
Chatfield, MN's Jacob Bleess added to the "Youth Brigade" theme for the evening by winning the night's EngineStore.com USRA B-Mod feature. But similar to Schott he too had to hold off a couple of hard charging veterans and a couple teen-aged peers in order to pick up that checkered flag.
Earlier in the evening 15 year-old Bleess showed that he had the goods by winning the opening heat race over another young-blood, Brandon Reutzel. During the evening's feature, it was two-time and defending track champion Ben Anderson and Erik Kanz, who already has two feature wins at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY this year, right behind Bleess' #21. But neither were able to catch Bleess to offer a challenge for the lead, setting the scene for another teenager celebrating a feature win.
After receiving a congratulatory hug from his dad Matt in the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane, the soft spoken Bleess climbed from the interior of his Modified and soaked up the cheers from the crowd. "Yeah, fun night." offered Bleess in his soft voice, "A little slippery, but fun." The smile and sparkle in his eyes though more than made up for the youngster's almost shy demeanor; it was obvious that a HUGE celebration was taking place behind those victorious eyes.
As Bleess lead the field, and as Anderson and Kanz enjoyed a hard fought battle for second and third, another pair of 15 year-olds, in the form of Alex Williamson and Parker Hale, were having their own little war for the fourth and fifth positions in the field. Willamson and Hale continue to show that they are both high caliber competitors and ready any night to contend at the front of the field. It's obvious the wins are not out of reach for either, and based on the way they've been running early this season, it wouldn't be surprising to see either of them in victory lane sooner rather than later.
RICHARDS RACES TO JAILHOUSE SALOON WISSOTA STREET STOCK FEATURE WIN
The Jailhouse Saloon WISSOTA Street Stocks have always put on entertaining racing on MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY's fast 1/3-mile. Friday's action was no different as no fewer than seven cars battled at the front of the field - all with a legitimate shot at the evening's feature win.
Independence, WI racer Mike Conrad dusted off "the old beater" as he called it, and showed that he's ready to add his name to the list of Street Stock racers who can win. After winning the second heat race earlier in the evening, Conrad jumped the outside of the front row and rode the ultra-high line all the way around the speedway to lead an impressive number of laps in a hotly contested feature event.
"The starts and restarts were killing me though," said Conrad after settling for a third place finish with his #M76, "I just had nothing on the starts. Once I'd get this old beater wound up though, she was strong!" It was hard work in the pits though that even allowed Conrad to battle at all during the feature. "We came in after the heat and the right front A-Frame was all bent up. Almost un-drivable." He explained of the thrashing he and his crew had to do to get the car ready for the feature, "We threw a new upper A-Arm on there and didn't even really have time to work the setup or camber or anything to how I wanted it. We just kind of eye-balled the toe and said 'that'll have to do'.
"But after the way it ran in that feature, my crew was all laughing and telling me 'maybe we shouldn't even change anything'."
Conrad had a great side by side battle Doug Wojcik before Wojcik's #3D expired for the night. Then is was Danny Richards, Cory Hanson, Ryan Henderson, Shaun Mann, Nick Schwebach making it a true six-car battle for the win over the closing laps. Over the final few circuits, it was clear that the win was more than likely going to be delivered to one of the top three though. Conrad continued running the high line, with Richards running so low that his left-side tires were consistently bouncing off the inside berm that separates the racing surface from the infield.
Hanson alternated between trying the high line behind Conrad running right down the middle in several three-wide battles for the top spot. Over the final few laps, Conrad, Hanson and Richards all had a run at the front of the field before Richards was able to finish the feature out front in a battle that came right down to the line as the trio raced door-to-door out of turn four to the waiving checkered flag.
"This car is strong," said Richards in victory lane, "I just kept running right down at the bottom. I'd get passed the 76 (Conrad) and then he'd come by me again, and (Hanson) was there too. But, I knew that I could do it down low."
First heat race winner Hanson just beat Conrad for second 17 year-old Ryan Henderson and Shaun Mann rounding out the top five.
JOE PROVINZINO COLLECTS SECOND 600 MOD FEATURE WIN
After falling just short of a feature win last Friday night, Chanhassen, MN 600 Mod driver Joe Provinzino raced his way back to victory lane with a feature win in the REDBOX+ 600 Mod division. "I pretty much gave last week's feature away with a bit of driver error," said Provinzino from victory lane, referring to some shifting trouble that allowed the other competitors to steal the lead and eventual win late in last week's feature, "so I had to redeem myself tonight."
That's exactly what he did as he raced out front and held off several challenges from Don Werner and Bruce Schmitt, who finished second and third respectively, to pick up his second feature win of the 2012 season.
DUBOIS, SPRUNG, STEVENS, & LARSON WIN SUPPORT DIVISION FEATURES
Larry DuBois caught Chris Abts in the closing laps of the Elmer's Auto Salvage M.T.S. Pure stock feature to pick up his first feature win of 2012.
Ben Sprung led start to finish to win the first of three appearances by the OUTLAW Mini Mods on the Lightning Speedway.
Matt Stevens led flag to flag to win the Sunshine Sanitation A-Mini Mod feature.
Jayden Larson won the Sunshine Sanitation B-Mini Mod feature earlier in the evening.
