FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (January 23rd, 2014) It is with great sadness that MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY reflects on the passing of a local racing legend. While, sadly, former racers pass away every year, MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY thought that Jim Schell deserved our thoughts and attention.

MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY is, of course, located just north of Fountain City, WI on the exact location of the old "Tri-Oval Speedway", and it was on this track that Jim Schell blazed a trail of speed like not many others. Local casual racing historian Todd Narveson recounted recently on some stats of Jim's:

"I have stats from the Tri-Oval/River Raceways in Fountain City up until 1979. Schell won the Hobby Stock point championship there in 1971 and 1972 along with 1977 and 1978.", Naveson offered, "He had 39-wins there and 85-top 5's from 1971 to 1979. In 1977 he won an (sic) incredible 14-times with 18-top fives out of 21-shows in the Hobby Stock division.

"Jim was the 1977 Hobby Stock point champion at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson. He had 18-career wins there. He had four feature wins at Rochester. He was the 1967 Street Stock champion at the Winona County Fairgrounds in St. Charles with seven wins there.

He also raced in the Sportsman class at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI and if my memory serves me right was a track champ there also."

"We were saddened to learn of Jim's passing," said MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY owner Bob Timm, "He was a huge part of the local racing scene during his time behind the wheel. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Jim's family and friends, and we hope that all race fans who used to come watch him on the track will take a moment to remember him and, perhaps, share a story or two with fellow racers or race fans."

But, not only was Schell a gifted racer, he was a well liked community member and, of course, a much loved family man. As can be seen from the beautiful eulogy posted on the Hoff Funeral Homes website (Jim Schell Eulogy) the area has lost another great individual.

This final checkered flag is for you Jim.
