By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (Friday May 15, 2015) After yet another week of rains the crew at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY did the unthinkable, whipping the wet and soggy 1/3-mile dirt track into yet another fast racing surface. And by all accounts from the reaction put forth by the racers who hit the surface, fast might actually be an understatement!

Through an evening of twists and turns that had fans on their feet, drivers up on the wheel, and digital scoring software recording near fastest laps ever there was never a break in the action or surprises. And after all was said and done, Three-Time and Defending Track Champion Tommy Richards had rolled his #7R Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stock back into the MTS Victory Lane for the first time in 2015, Brad Waits endured a battle for the ages to win the Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified Feature, former Track Champion Erik Kanz stayed out ahead of bizarre Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod feature field to pick up a feature win . . . and through all of this, and more, the fans in the stands enjoyed wild night of action!

RICHARDS BACK TO VICTORY LANE

Mondovi, WI's Tommy Richards knows how to win at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. He's proved this over the past three years by picking up back-to-back-to-back track championships. Three years in a row, 2012, 2013 & 2014, Richards has shown the competition that he is the current master of "The Big 1/3-Mile"! But for the first couple of weeks of 2015, the #7R has had to leave the track at the conclusion of the evening's feature without first sitting in Victory Lane.

Not that second place finishes are terrible, but after three championships in a row, they are almost expected.

And for the third week in a row it seemed that a similar scenario might play out as Cameron, WI's Curt Myers stepped out front to lead the field. Myers won the Super Stock feature the previous week, and through 2014 showed that when he showed up at MTS he was a force with which to be reckoned as he visited Victory Lane six times during a heavy traveling schedule that only brought him to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY a few more times than that.

But, like opening night 2015, a win was not meant to be as Myers' #1M pulled up lame while leading the field down the front stretch; Myers exited the speedway with a mechanical DNF and the spoils then belonged to Richards.

Richards worked the rest of the competition before pulling away to the win. Behind him, Troy Langowski had a rejuvenating evening running second and holding off hot-shoes Jeff Brauer and Jason Forehand for second.

YELLOW CHECKERED PUTS WAITS IN VICTORY LANE

When race fans want an on-track battle to talk about, they'll need look no further than Friday night's Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature. After winning the evening's first heat race, Mantorville, MN's Joel Alberts looked poised to collect a 'Clean Sweep' in the ultra-fast division as he jumped from the pole position starting spot at the beginning of the evening's 25-lap main event.

Alberts, along with the other top-four starters battled each other hard and often through the entire feature. Previous week's winner Bob Timm, along with second heat race winner Lucas Schott and Mick Glenn roared around the "hammer-down" raceway swapping positions lap after lap. Glenn, especially, enjoying a night near the front, until he jumped the cushion in turn two and pancaked the right side of his #18 on the outside retaining wall and headed for hauler.

After that it was Brad Waits throwing his name into the battle along with Alberts, Timm & Schott. Yes, Waits, who'd lined his flat-black #24 up on the inside of the SEVENTH row at the start of the feature!

What followed was a little racing magic, as Waits, Timm and Schott battled their way past Alberts and began a three-way battle royale for the win. All four drivers at the front of the field spent time rim-riding the extreme high line, riding the cushion and producing fast laps circuit after circuit. Waits was the first to see the top side begin going away and the first to drop to the bottom to make his move. "Yeah, I could see that the top was starting to go away and maybe roughen up a little", said Waits after the battle was over. Waits used the opposite extreme, running all the down at the very bottom of the banking, and worked his way past his competitors.

But neither Schott or Timm were giving up. Timm and Schott spent a few laps hunting a bit lower on the banking, and Timm and Waits swapped the top spot several times through the closing laps on the way to what all thought would be an amazing finish. Unfortunately a caution on the final lap produced a bit of a let down as the race wrapped up with a Yellow-Checkered finish. Waits, Timm and Schott finishing first, second and third.

SASS WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE

Justin Sass has been playing in the Late Model Ranks for a while; Friday night was his turn to enjoy some time out front and collect a feature win behind the wheel of his #24 USRA Limited Late Model presented by Liquid Nitro Energy Drinks and Steve Yaggy Trucking. Not once, but twice Sass was the first to the checkered flag, winning both his heat race and the evening's 20 lap feature.

Sass did start the night's main event from the pole but the action behind him kept him on his toes as first Curt Luhmann, then Tommy Brink, then Cody Gardner all spent time right behind the #24 battling for second place. After that it was former B-Mod National Champ Troy Hovey, before the previous week's feature winner Lance Hofer moved his #11 into second.

Hofer was coming with a head of steam from his seventh place starting spot, but ran out of laps before Sass grabbed the win. "You know, I've had a blast racing late models", said Sass as he celebrated in Victory Lane, "but now with this new division, I can still have a blast it's a lot easier on my wallet! I know that there are others either thinking about building one of these, or already building one of these . . . I can't wait for them to all get out there, this is how we save the Late Model class at the weekly tracks."

KANZ WINS B-MOD FEATURE

Hmmm, what to say about the evening's Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod action. 30-cars strong, the division continues to produce high-light action week in and week out. Four heats, a B-Main LCQ and a wild 18-lap main event produced a little something for everyone.

For 2012 MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY track champion Erik Kanz, what the evening produced was a return to form and a visit to Victory Lane. After winning the evening's fourth heat race, Kanz jumped from his feature starting pole position and raced away from the field to dominate the evening's main event. Second heat race winner Ryan Olson put forth a stout charge, coming from seventh to second, but really never got close enough to Kanz's #23K to offer a real challenge for the lead.

When the checkered flag waived, Kanz enjoyed a 1.6 second lead and rolled into Victory Lane with a smile on his face, "Ever since I picked up this car last year it's been fast and smooth. It's way to early in the year to think championship", said Kanz after the win, "so I'll keep working every week for wins; if the wins come, well, then we'll see about another championship."

Olson settled for a solid second place finish with Ben Moudry in third and Parker Hale continuing a strong start to 2015 with a fourth place finish just ahead of Kyle Anderson who rounded out the top-5.

WOHLETZ WINS AGAIN

After coming up dry in 2014, 2012 Track Champion Greg Wohletz put together his second feature win in as many weeks in the redbox+ 600 mod division. Through an 18-lap feature which produced several hair raising moments and several tight restarts, Wohletz used speed and momentum to keep his #32 out front after first driving hard to work through the field after starting tenth in the 17 car field.

Second heat race winner Kurt Kramer looked poised to pick up his very first feature win until Wohletz and first heat race winner John Griffin raced past. Kramer had to settle for a fourth place finish just behind Mike James in third

DWYER AND JOHNSON WIN SPORTSMAN AND HORNET FEATURES

Steve Dwyer and Derek Sutton enjoyed a little bump and bang fun for the battle out front of the Jailhouse Saloon MTS Sportsman feature with Dwyer eventually clearing Sutton for the win. "Yeah, I went a little hot into turn three there after we rubbed on the start", said Dwyer after the win, "I apologize for that but it really was some great racing up front there with Derek." Sutton and his fan-favorite station wagon settled for second just ahead of last week's first-time feature winner Jordan Becker.

As a few more Hornet drivers continue to make their way to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY to enjoy the dirt-tracking fun, fans are starting to see great battles through out the field. Friday night's main battle was out front as second heat race winner Sean Svee, opening night feature winner Johnny Severtson and Jeremy Johnson put forth a great three-way battle out front. Johnson was able to hold on for the win with Severtson, Svee and Carroll Hundorf completing the top-4.

LaDUKE AND SUCKOW WIN MINI-MOD MAINS

The future of dirt track racing looks strong as the youth continue to get involved via the Sunshine Refuse A & B Mini-Mod divisions competing on the 1/10-mile "LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY" within the infield of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, as 19 cars and drivers were registered to compete during the opening night action for the youngsters.

Matthew LaDuke held off strong challenges from the competition to win the evening's A Mini-Mod feature with Colby Mann and John Luhmann finishing second and third respectively.

Cole Suckow bested the 10-car line-up in the B Mini-Mod feature racing to the feature win followed by heat-race winner Triton Krause and Gavin Tarras.

Racing resumes Friday night May 22ND with the first green flag of the evening waiving at 6 PM for the Sunshine Refuse A & B Midwest Mini Mods on the 1/10-mile "Lightning Speedway", which is located within the infield of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Action on "The Big 1/3 Mile" starts immediately following the 7 PM Opening Ceremonies with on-track competition provided by Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, USRA Limited Late Models presented by Liquid Nitro Energy Drink and Steve Yaggy Trucking, Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mods, Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks, redbox+ 600 Mods, Jailhouse Saloon MTS Sportsman, and MTS Hornets!
