FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (Friday April 29, 2016) – Opening Night 2016! FINALLY!!!

After months of cold, wind, ice, & snow . . . after months of torches, welding, fabricating, & painting . . . after months of waiting, dreaming, anticipating, & planning . . . FINALLY . . . the racing season IS BACK!!

And despite, or, perhaps, in spite of, a preceding week of rain and the return of cool, if not down-right chilly, temperatures, racers and race fans were rewarded with actual green-flag action at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Friday night, April 29th!!

As if to add to the spectacle of returning action, those green-flag laps were filled to over-flowing with side-by-side racing (actually 5-wide on several occasions!), back and forth battles for the lead, last-lap passes for feature wins, and even a few spills & thrills!

But the main story is simply that THE 2016 RACING SEASON AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY IS HERE AND UNDER WAY!!

Mid-week weather did NOT look promising, as rains, clouds and cool temperatures blanketed the surrounding area. With over 110 TONS of new clay laid on the racing surface of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY during the off-season, speedway owner Bob Timm was blessed with beautiful conditions the previous two weeks - allowing him the opportunity to work the track and whip it into pristine racing conditions. When Friday morning the 29th rolled around, those prior weeks of track prep paid priceless dividends as Timm was able to work with the recent moisture and lay down what turned out to be a very racy surface through the entire evening.

"I'll be honest," said Timm Friday night, "I was really worried with all the rain we'd gotten. I started working the track at the very earliest moment I could get on it, and it took me right up until about 2:30 this afternoon before I was actually sure that we were even going racing tonight!"

But dedication like that, and an uncanny skill to prepare a wonderful racing surface for the competitors (and the fans), is why more and more racers are continuing to visit MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Former Track Champion, and Friday evening's eventual Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature winner Lucas Schott voiced what many drivers know, "All of us racers know what weather like what we've had can do to a race track, but also we know Bob is going to give us a great track. That's why we always like coming back to MISSISSIPPI THUNDER (SPEEDWAY)."

That win of Schott's, by the way, was something to watch.

The two-time (2014 & 2012) Track Champion rocketed out of the pole position starting spot at the beginning of the evening's 25-Lap Season Opener RiverCity Manufacturing USRA Modified Feature and led the opening 10 laps of green-flag racing. But behind his red & white #69 a challenge was brewing as New Richland, MN's Jason Cummins found a fast groove in the wide turns and was busy racing his way to the front from his starting spot on the outside of the third row.

"I could see him coming, then he flew right by me," Schott said of Cummins, who grabbed the lead on Lap 10, and held the top spot until Schott altered his line around the speedway and reclaimed the lead on lap 14.

Defending Track Champion Brad Waits spent the opening nine laps racing for second and third before slipping back and settling into his eventual finishing position of fourth.

2013 & 2010 Track Champion Josh Angst was also in the mix as he battle in the top-5 all feature long enroute to his second place finish as the checkered flag waived!

Schott's feature win gave him a 'clean sweep' of the evening after also winning the evening's second heat race in the division earlier in the program.

BAHR IS BACK

Tony Bahr made a statement Friday night - Despite his Back . . . he is Back!!

"I've been out of the game a few years now," explained Tony Bahr, before Friday's season opener at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, "I had a broken back, neck surgery, and I just couldn't race. Sold my Modified. Then I heard about this division that Bob put together, I kept tabs on it last season, and when I knew that I could get back into racing, I KNEW that this was WHAT I would be racing."

Bahr was still making minor adjustments to his new USRA Limited Late Model after unloading it at the track Friday afternoon . . . and those adjustments were apparently perfect, as he was able to race his way to the front of the field during the evening's Centerville Welding & Repair USRA Limited Late Models, Presented by Big Toy Storage feature and start the season off with a trip to Victory Lane!

Bahr first had to work around the #88 of Late Model new-comer Troy Langowski before setting his sights on the #24 of race leader Justin Sass.

Sass led the first 13 laps of the 20-lap feature but didn't quite have the late-race handling necessary to stay ahead of Bahr. "I could see that Justin's car was really getting tight as the laps wore on," explained Bahr in Victory Lane, "That did open up the bottom for me over here in turn two also gave me a pretty good window here in turn four."

Bahr was able to take the lead on lap 14 and held onto the top spot all the way to the waiving checkered flag!

Defending Late Model Track Champion Lance Hofer put on a strong charge late in the feature, but came up just a bit short and settled for a second place finish just ahead of early race leader Justin Sass.

The 20-lap feature was halted for a scary moment when Bob Fort's #97 flipped wildly through turn three before tumbling back to earth and landing on all four tires. Despite the car being completely destroyed, Fort was able to climb out under his own power and walk away from the scary crash.

KATH CAPTURES the CROWN

Kylie Kath will be the first to tell you that racing is always unpredictable!

Half way through Friday night's Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod feature, Kath was running second behind Jon Van Minsel . . . and, well, it really didn't look like Van Minsel was catchable. Enjoying a lead that almost half a straight away, it looked like the brand new #1 was going to be celebrating feature win #1 at the end of the feature.

But, racing is unpredictable.

Kath's green #83 was fast, but Van Minsel was able to jump from his outside front row starting spot and open up a commanding lead over the first 10 laps. Race fans might have been thinking, "Well, this win will be Van Minsel's; Kath will have to settle for a battle for second."

But, racing is unpredictable.

Van Minsel's downfall was the fact that he was too fast! Go figure. As the leader, he was the first to catch the competitors at the tail of the pack . . . unfortunately for the Decorah, IA racer, those racers at the tail end of the field were embroiled in their own little battle for position. As Van Minsel approached the traffic, his line around the track was impeded - this forced Van Minsel to slow his lap-times just enough to allow Kath to catch and eventually pass him for the lead!

"I could see that we were catching the other cars," explained Kath from Victory Lane, "Jon went high and he kind of got blocked in there a bit at exactly the same time that my lane on the bottom opened up and . . . I just, kind of, zipped past."

Van Minsel finished second just a half second ahead of second heat-race winner Parker Kessel in third.

THE RICHARDS RUMBLE

It seems to be a weekly question when the Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks pull onto the track at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, "Who can beat Richards?"

Well, who would have suspected that the first racer to beat Richards would be . . . Richards!

Perhaps an explanation is in order.

Tommy Richards is, quite possibly, the King of WISSOTA Super Stock racing at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY. Four Track Championships in a row with his #7R have proven that this smiley dude KNOWS how to win at the fast and racy "Big 1/3-Mile"! Interestingly enough, the rest of the Richards family is also VERY fast. In years past, Danny Richards has accumulated many feature wins and track championships behind the wheel of a WISSOTA Street Stock, and George Richards has collected feature wins and track championships with his #5R Pure Stock.

Over the winter, Danny Richards decided that in addition to his #3R Street Stock, he was going to also pilot a #3R WISSOTA Super Stock and see if he could beat Tommy at his own game. Who would have thought that it might happen on Opening Night?!

For 19 laps of the 20-lap season opener, it looked like Danny Richards was going to open up his Super Stock career with a feature win at the track Tommy has mastered.

Danny jumped out to the lead right away on lap number 1, and Tommy followed. A game of chaser and chasee ensued as Tommy tried every trick up his sleeve to sneak by Danny to take the lead. Lap after lap they were either nose to tail or side by side; literally inches apart, yet never once touching!

As if out of a script for a big-budget movie production, the family battle blazed on for the entire feature until through the final turns of the final lap, Tommy's #7R found an opening, made the pass and raced away with the feature win! A separation of just fifteen one-hundredths of a second separated the related racers when the checkered flag waved.

Tommy pulled into Victory Lane, and Danny followed. Was Danny disappointed? Nobody knows, because he sprang out of his #3R with a HUGE "That was the most fun I've ever had" grin on his face and ran straight to Tommy to offer a congratulatory hug! "That was (expletive) AWESOME!" shouted Danny as they both hugged and smiled.

Tommy's ever-present smile there, just like it always is, "He really ran a perfect race. I thought I could maybe beat him, I just needed the right chance; and I guess I got it right there at the end."

CISEWSKI - THE MIDDLE SCHOOL FLASH

14 year-old middle school student Hunter Cisewski is going to have the absolute best answer to the age old question of "So, what did you do over the weekend?" when he returns to school Monday morning. His answer? "Not much, just beat 16 other 'adults' and won my very first 600 Mod feature . . . that's about all!"

That's right, with a smile that seemed like a never-ending arc across his youthful face, Cisewski climbed from behind the wheel of his Modified which was sitting in the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane, and simply basked in the glow of what he'd just accomplished.

Former Champions: beaten.

Former Late Model racers: bested.

Multi-year veterans: trumped.

Cisewski held off 600 Mod speedster Chris Gilbertson, who made it a habit to challenge young Cisewski for the lead on almost every turn of every lap. Despite not completing the pass for the win, Gilbertson was full of praise after the race, "I gave him everything I had. Pretty neat, though, to see Hunter get his first feature win!"

Defending Track Champion Kyle Jumbeck finished behind the duo in third.

BECKER AND LOVE ALSO WINNERS

Jordan Becker returned to Victory Lane with his #4J . . . this time, however, as a competitor in the all new Jailhouse Saloon USRA Hobby Stock division. "We thought the Sportsman class would work last year." smiled Becker after the feature win, "Hopefully this new Hobby Stock division, with its matching rules package, will help build up the number of cars and competitors in this class."

Jeremy Oakes finished second ahead of Bobby Fort, JR. in third.

In the newly sponsored Harmston Trucking MTS Hornet division, Armond Love won the very first feature of 2016 at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY, "I started seventh and hoped for the best," said the Eau Claire racer. "The caution flag came out and we were able to go for it."

Racing resumes next Friday night May 6th with another complete night of dirt-track action presented by Winona County! The first green flag of the evening actually waives at 6:30 PM for the Harmston Trucking MTS Hornets.

Action on "The Big 1/3 Mile" resumes immediately following the 7:00 PM Opening Ceremonies with on-track competition provided by the Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modifieds, Centerville Welding & Repair USRA Limited Late Models presented by Big Toy Storage, Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mods, Coordinated Business Systems WISSOTA Super Stocks, REDBOX+ 600 Modifieds, & Jailhouse Saloon USRA Hobby Stocks!
