MTS Driver Of The Week

By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (Friday June 2, 2017) With the Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modifieds off for the night, race fans needn't worry that there would be a shortage of excitement during NAPA Night at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!

The introduction of USRA Stock Cars and a visit by the Victory Promotions 600 Mod Touring Series to the night's scheduled (completed with weekly regular classes Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mods, Centerville Welding & Repair USRA Late Models presented by Big Toy Storage and the Harmston Trucking MTS Hornets insured that the on-track action would be just as hot as always!

By the waiving of the evening's final checkered flag - most race fans headed to their own cars in the parking lot or the pits for autographs were in agreement with one race fans' vocalizations over the Speedway P.A. system, "Weekly racing like that - there's none better anywhere else!" . . .

KANZ COLLECTS THIRD STRAIGHT BLACK HORSE BAR & GRILL USRA B-MOD FEATURE WIN

speedhive.mylaps.com/Sessions/4415040

Second heat race winner Alex Williamson jumped to the early lead of the 18-Lap 23-Car feature with his #15W amidst a pack of challengers comprised of Jackson "Jackhammer" Hale #20, 2012 MTS Track Champion Erik Kanz #23K & Nick Wagner's recently repaired redbox+ #19.

Williamson lead the opening 3 laps before Kanz (using the extreme high groove - right up along the concrete wall) raced past for the lead. Meanwhile, Williamson (right down at the extreme bottom of the banking) and Kanz sea-sawed back and forth in a battle for the lead that lasted the first 16 laps!

Unfortunately, on a late race restart Williamson didn't quite get the jump he wanted and was passed by both the #1 of Jon Van Minsel and Casey Knutson's #12K.

Knutson who had started 5th and dropped all the way back in the field to 10th before racing back to the third place finish followed Van Minsel beneath Williamson and stayed in the top three to the checkered flag.

Kanz raced to his third straight feature win, followed across the line by Van Minsel, Knutson, Williamson, & #3A Taylor Ausurd.

CISEWSKI SNAGS VICTORY PROMOTIONS 600 MOD TOURING SERIES FEATURE WIN

speedhive.mylaps.com/Sessions/4415044

At the opening of any 600 Mod Touring Series event, many eyes are often focused towards one specific competitor. Joe Prvinzino has made a habit of capturing Touring Series wins behind the wheel of his familiar black and green #89. But Friday's feature threw the proverbial 'monkey wrench' into "Joe Provo's" plans as his 600 Mod stalled to a stop on the front straight before the field had even bunched up in anticipation of a green flag start. While the current Victory Promotions 600 Mod Touring Series point leader, and third-heat race winner, was eventually able to refire his modified . . . it was only an omen of what was to follow, as despite turning in competetively fast laps, Provinzino never really factored into the evening's battle for the lead or the win.

With the dropping of the green flag, Pole sitter and second heat-race winner #1 Cody Gardner (fresh off his first 600 Mod feature win the previous Friday during weekly action) battled first heat-race winner #80 Bruce Schmitt and the #01X of two-time and defending Track Champion Kyle Jumbeck early at the front of the field. Jumbeck went straight to the extreme top of the all new MTS banking in the turns, running the highline to the lead; Schmitt did lead lap 1 before Jumbeck passed on the outside to lead laps 2 through 9.

Schmitt kept working the middle grooves - entering turns 1 and 3 very low and then letting his #80 drift just a bit up into the middle of the banking trying to wring as much speed as possible out of each lap. As the feature laps ticked away Schmitt built momentum and the crowd roared with delight as the hometown Fountain City native first battled side by side with Jumbeck for a couple laps before completing the pass for the lead on lap 10! Schmitt stretched the lead as Jumbeck's handling appeared to go away - slipping back in the field to an eventual 6th place finish in the 21-car field.

Cody Gardner, running a similar line as Schmitt, began re-challenging Schmitt for the lead near the lap 13 mark of the 18-lap event; but, in the closing laps, the Ace Auto #04 of 15-year old Hunter Cisewski came to life!

Running fourth through most of the feature, Cisewski built a late-race charge - battled Gardner for second on lap 16 & 17 and then on the last lap, Cisewski blasted past Schmitt for the lead and eventual feature win!

"I knew that my car was fast," smiled Cisewski in Victory Lane after the win, "I just kept driving it as best I could! After a win like this, maybe I'll think about running the entire schedule the rest of this year." he finished with a grin.

Schmitt, Gardner, #8 Curt Luhmann & #7 Chad Dugan completed the top 5 at the line.

SOLEM WINS FIRST VISIT OF USRA STOCK CARS TO MTS

The USRA Stock Cars made their first visit to the High Banks of MTS in 2017 Friday evening during NAPA Night. This highly competitive class - made up of big engines, narrow tires, high speeds all jammed inside street-styled full bodies (retaining a fan-familiar look much like street stocks or hobby stocks) - always puts on a great show . . . and Friday's battles were no different than what many expected!

#55H Troy Hansmeier (who's raced at MTS in previous years in a USRA Late Model) jumped to the lead of the evening's 20-lap feature early with first heat-race winner Mitch Hovden and the #37 of Pete Solem giving chase.

The fast line for this final feature race of the evening was nailed right down at the bottom of the banking, producing a freight trane of speed around the inside of MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY! But, just past the halfway point of the 20-lap feature Hovden, realizing that simply following the leader would not produce a feature win, jumped all the way to the top of the steep banking looking for a line around Hansmeier for the lead. Unfortunately for Hovden, that didn't work as his #15 lost grip and speed in turn 2 and slipped behind the charging Solem.

Solem then stepped out of line, in turns 1 & 2, with just a couple laps to go - but not all the way to the top, just one groove to the right of Hansmeier. The brief side-by-side battle for the win was decided through 1 & 2, down the back straight and into turn 3. Solem completed the pass in turn 4 and raced to the feature win!

"This was my first time EVER at MTS," said a happy Solem in victory lane, "I really like this track! If you (MTS) ever schedule a return visit, I'll definitely be here!"

Following Solem across the line were Hansmeier, Hovden, Jake Lampert #11, & Kevin Donlan #33.

HOFER AGAIN AT FRONT OF CENTERVILLE WELDING & REPAIR USRA LATE MODELS PRESENTED BY BIG TOY STORAGE

speedhive.mylaps.com/Sessions/4415048

Troy Langowski's red #88 lead the 16-car field to the green flag from his "pole position" on the inside of the front row to start the "NAPA 20" 20-lap Feature; but it was a short lived sprint at the front of the pack as 2015 Track Champion Lance Hofer immediately mounted an attack and took the lead at the front of the field before the end of the first lap.

Shaun Mann #01 gave chase and looked capable of closing in on Hofer and possibly challenging for the lead. By lap 6 the leaders had already caught the tail end of the field and began lapping competitors; Hofer worked past the first car but when Mann tried to pass in turn 3, there was contact and Mann's #01 received race ending damage.

On the restart after the caution for Mann's spin, Hofer again raced away from the field; never to be challenged again. Tony Bahr tried closing in on Hofer to challenge with his #QQ, but couldn't quite get there.

Hofer collected the feature win followed across the line by Bahr, Curt Luhmann (#8), 2016 Track Champ Justin Sass (#24) & Langowski.

KNUDTSON WINS FIRST EVER MTS FEATURE IN JAILHOUSE SALOON USRA HOBBY STOCKS / STREET STOCK MIXED COMPANY

It appeared that Danny Richards was ready to run to a win as his #3R jumped out the early lead of the 19-car feature field. Richards put the high line to good use while competitors produced exciting racing from the bottom to the top just behind him.

But, through the action, Michael Knudtson's #42K raced through the field snatched the feature win, making his first ever trip to the MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Victory Lane.

"I love this Track," said Knudtson in Victory Lane, "I'm glad we're able to come here tonight and hope that we can come back for more!"

After Richards won the opening heat race, Danny Hanson (#5) and USRA Hobby Stock regular Steven Holthaus (#70) won the second and third heats.

SEVERTSON BACK IN FORM TO WIN HARMSTON TRUCKING MTS HORNET FEATURE

Johnny Severtson grabbed his 23rd feature win after besting the fast field in the 23-car Harmston Trucking MTS Hornet feature. Severtson was followed beneath the waiving checkered flag by Brad York #383 & JR Tourtellott #35.

KRAUSE & BOLAND WIN SUNSHINE REFUSE JR & SR SLINGSHOT FEATURES ON THE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY

The #01 of Trevor Krause topped the Sunshine Refuse JR Slingshot feature while Brady Boland's #88B was class of the field in the SR Slingshot division!
