SORENSEN AND BOUMEESTER ADD THEIR NAME TO THE LIST OF RIVERCITY RUMBLE WINNERS AT MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY!
By Dan Bailey
FOUNTAIN CITY, WI (Friday July 6, 2018) – Another year, Another Rumble, Another great car count, & another packed house at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY
for the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Rivercity Rumble!
165 cars and another record crowd packed MTS for a night of excitment, battles, slide-jobs, and celebrations . . . after the fireworks had finished, not a
single race fan went home dissatisfied! With B-Mains needed for both Modified divisions (USRA Modifieds & USRA B-Mods) . . . the first step was simply qualifying
for the big-money mains!
SORENSEN RACES TO RIVERCITY MANUFACTURING USRA MODIFIEDS RUMBLE FEATURE WIN
The Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified feature was the end game . . . but even before the green flag could fly to start the high-dollar feature, the 40-car
field needed to be weeded via five (5) qualifying heat races, followed by two (2) last-chance-qualifier B-Mains!
After the hard-fought battles to simply race their way IN to the 30-car feature, the mind set then zeroed in on how to get to the front of the field.
At the drop of that green flag, Pole sitter Jesse Glenz ripped off the fasted lap of the night, on his way to leading lap number one. The almost 85 mile per hour
average lap speed had many in the grandstands (and possibly in the pits as well) thinking that Glenz might be the first Rumble Champion with wins in both the
Black Horse Bar & Grill USRA B-Mod (2010) and the premier Rivercity Manufacturing USRA Modified divisions.
For the opening 9 laps, Glenz led the field with fourth heat race winner Jacob Bleess giving chase. As Bleess prepared challenges for the leader, the talk then
turned to the fact that Bleess, as the 2012 Rumble champion - behind the wheel of his B-Mod, had the same opportunity to turn the double! What?! A perfect battle
out front - for all to enjoy.
Suddenly, though, Glenz began to fade; and quickly at that. Lap 10 - second. Lap 14 - fourth. Lap 16 - eighth. Lap 19 - twelfth. And then, Glenz was simply out
of the race.
With Glenz' exit from the picture, it became Bleess' turn to shine; the 2013 & 2014 MTS Track Champion throttled his #21 EZ Fabricating Modified around
the high banks and looked prepared to lead the field all the way to the finish.
But, there was a hunter deep in the field - stalking his prey and waiting for just the right opportunity to add another notch to his saddle. That hunter was
Dustin Sorensen. In the evening's opening heat, Sorensen had raced his #19 from near the rear of the field to the front for the race win. The evening's feature
was similar.
As the green flag sent the 30-car field into turn one, Sorensen was trying to find an open lane from his starting spot barely inside the top 10.
But lap after lap, Sorensen dispensed with a veritable "Who's-Who" listing of Modified Masters - Multi-time USRA & WISSOTA National Champion Cory Crapser, 200
time feature winner (and MTS Owner) Bob Timm, Multi-Time Track Champion & UMSTS Star Lucas Schott; and that list went on and on and on - AJ Deimel, Curt Myers,
Adam Hensel, and more.
Just past the halfway point, Sorensen pounced and ripped the lead away from Bleess. From there on out, it was Sorensen, Bleess and Schott battling for the lead
and the eventual win; with Sorensen holding on for the big pay.
Schott nabbed Bleess on the final lap, for second, with former Track Champion Brad Waits and Deimel finishing fourth and fifth behind Bleess.
BOUMEESTER BEST IN B-MODS
Jared Boumeester won the B-Mod feature! There; that is, indeed, the top story from this division; or is it?!
What the box score will fail to show is that Dale Jr.'s shout of "Slide Job" would have been right at home in the closing laps of Friday's Black Horse Bar & Grill
USRA B-Mod Rivercity Rumble Feature! And not just one, or twice, or thrice!
As laps in the 30-lap feature ticked away, the battle at the front of the pack intensified at an almost exponential rate. Former USRA National Champion Troy Hovey
had steadily worked from outside the top 6, to the front of the field. First working towards the front, and then eventually taking the lead from Boumeester himself.
But, that was only the start of the fun. The closing laps battle between Boumeester and Hovey were being talked about on social media platforms mear minutes after
the checkered flag had waived. The "slide jobs" came fast and furious (but cleanly) at both ends of the speedway - with lead changes doubling every lap!
When the dust had settled, Boumeester was in Victory Lane celebrating the Rumble win while Hovey could only think about what had happened and what could have been,
(Boumeester) and me were throwing sliders for the last couple (laps)," Hovey commented on Social media, "Still super fun nite."
Dan Hovden, Michael Truscott & JT Wasmund completed the top 5 of the 30-car, 30-lap feature.
HOFER ROLLS INTO SEVENTH STRAIGHT FEATURE WIN
Lance Hofer raced his #11 Furniture 123 USRA Late Model to his seventh straight feature win at MISSISSIPPI THUNDER SPEEDWAY Friday evening. With a strong
field breathing heavily down his backside, Hofer's mastery was gently tested, but never threatened.
The Cochrane, WI racer made his way once again into Victory Lane to celebrate another strike in his ongoing unbeaten streak!
Shaun Mann made a strong run to a second place finish, with Troy Langowski holding off Alex Williamson & Barry Johnson for third.
KRAUSE CRUISES, AGAIN
After winning the early evening third heat race, Travis Krause made it two-in-a-row as he raced to another Jailhouse Saloon USRA Hobby Stock feature win.
First heat race winner Danny Richards returned to MTS in fast form, but came up just one position shy of a victorious return. The second place finish,
however, was one position better than second heat race winner Steve Dwyer was able to enjoy.
GARDNER GRABS 600 FEATURE WIN
Cody Gardner raced his way around the competition to claim the redbox+ 600 Mod feature victory!
Prior week's feature winner Chris Gilbertson and Joe Provinzino battled past defending Track Champion Bruce Schmitt to finish second and third respectively.
KITCHNER WINS HORNET FEATURE
Shadow Kitchner claimed his first Harmston Trucking MTS Hornet feature of 2018 by fending off advances by point leader Don Martens and beating all to the checkered
flag.
Martens kept third heat race winner Johnny Severtson behind him, as Hunter Miller and Dan Prissel completed the top-5.
STOCKHAUSEN AND BOLAND ARE SLINGSHOT WINNERS ON THE LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY
Mason Stockhausen celebrated his 7th birthday by winning the evening's Sunshine Refuse JR Slingshot feature win on The LIGHTNING SPEEDWAY.
